What is CBD?
CBD is short for cannabidiol. It’s also made from the cannabis plant. CBD is related to THC, but it’s not psychoactive, so it doesn’t make you “high” like THC does. CBD is easier to find in the U.S. than THC, but each state has different laws and restrictions on selling CBD.
CBD comes in many forms, including oils, extracts, patches, vapes, and topical lotions, and it's said to have various health benefits. It’s also the active ingredient in Epidiolex, the first medication made from a marijuana ingredient approved by the FDA to treat epilepsy.
What is THC?
THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces a “high” sensation. It can be consumed by smoking cannabis. It’s also available in oils, edibles, tinctures, capsules, and more.
Potential benefits of THC:
Research suggests THC may help with conditions such as glaucoma, muscle spasticity, low appetite, insomnia, pain, anxiety, and nausea.
Is CBD legal?
In the US, CBD derived from hemp (containing less than 0.3% THC) is legal at the federal level. However, state laws may vary regarding CBD products.
Potential benefits of CBD:
Some research suggests CBD may help with conditions like anxiety, pain, inflammation, seizures, and sleep issues.
THC-A stands for Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid.
THC-A is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in raw, unprocessed cannabis plants. It is the precursor to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis.
THC-A is converted to THC through a process called decarboxylation, which occurs when the plant is heated or exposed to ultraviolet light. This process breaks down the carboxylic acid group in THC-A, releasing carbon dioxide and forming THC.
Research on THC-A is ongoing, but potential benefits include:
Anti-inflammatory effects for conditions like arthritis and pain, Neuroprotective effects for neurodegenerative diseases, Anti-anxiety and antidepressant properties, and Anti-cancer activity.
